In the first chapter of Exodus we are told of a command given by the king of Egypt to two midwives of the Hebrews. Israel (the Hebrews) are under bondage to Egypt because the of the new king.
(Exodus 1:8) “Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.”
This is the command that he gave the midwives:
(Exodus 1:15-16) “¶ And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah: {16} And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.”
He is commanding them to kill all the sons of Israel. The government of Egypt is telling them to kill babies. However, the midwives did not obey the king.
(Exodus 1:17) “But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.”
Because the midwives chose to obey God and save their infant sons from death, God blessed them.
(Exodus 1:20-21) “Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. {21} And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.”
Since Pharaoh (king of Egypt) didn’t get his way with the Hebrew midwives, he then commanded his own people to kill the newborn sons of Israel.
(Exodus 1:22) “And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.”
Later in Exodus, God calls Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt through a series of judgments against Egypt. These judgments are a picture of the final judgments told of in the book of Revelation. Could it be that one of the reasons God judges Egypt is their guilt in killing the newborn sons of Israel? I would say yes.
Recently, the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade. This removed the federal approval of abortion and put it back to the states. Many states were ready for this with bills and laws to immediately make abortion illegal. The opposite is true also in that some states are making abortion legal within their borders. In fact, there are people that want to be able to kill a baby after it has been born! This is just like what was done in Egypt so long ago. Yes, we are ripe for judgment.
May God have mercy on us and my the people of our nation repent of this great evil.
