But it is good for me to draw near to God… Psalm 73:28a

Love Me

I love GodThe phrase, “love me” occurs nine times in the Bible.  This first time it occurs is in the account of Jacob and his wives. In this account, Jacob is tricked into marrying Leah when he really loved her younger sister Rachel. The Bible tells us in Genesis 29:30 that Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. Because of this we read:

And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren. – Genesis 29:31 (KJV)

There is one thing that Leah wanted from her husband, Jacob – that he would love her.

(Genesis 29:32) “And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.”

God Remembered

Hannah, who was barren, prayed to the LORD and asked: “if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid” (excerpted from 1 Samuel 1:11 KJV). In verse 19 of the same chapter we are told: “the LORD remembered her”.

When Judgment Comes

God’s judgment will be a fearful thing for all men. In fact, according to Revelation 6:16, men will want the mountains and rocks to fall on them rather than to suffer the wrath of God. Fear will also grip the believer, but their reaction will be much different than evil men. Read more »

It is His Church, after all!

It is troubling to me that becoming a pastor is more reliant on completing a seminary education than many years of faithfully following God. It seems to me that years of faithful obedience, through times of trial and testing, is a better teacher than years of study. After all, how old was Jesus when he began his public ministry? To be close to God, you must be close to Jesus

How small I feel when flying in an airplane. The land below seems so big when I look out the window. Then I think about how tiny our planet Earth is in comparison to the Universe. I ask myself, “Am I really closer to God when I am 33,000 feet in the air compared to when I am standing on the ground?” Read more »

God is Seeking the Righteous

As Abraham stood with the Lord, looking towards Sodom and Gomorrah, we are given a glimpse into the great mercy of God. In Genesis 18:23-32 we read what was said between Abraham and God. Abraham’s plea went out to God. If only ten righteous be found in these two cities, would God spare them? To this, God replied that he would not destroy them for the sake of ten righteous. Father, show us how to love like Jesus loves!

Some of the greatest truths about Jesus are said in very few words. I am reminded of the time when Jesus joined the mourners for Lazarus. What are we told about his feelings? We are simply told, ” Jesus wept.” John 11:35 (KJV) When the people there saw Jesus weeping, they said Behold how he loved him!” John 11:36b (KJV) What characterized Jesus? It was his love. God is pleading with you to follow Him!

I got lost once when I was a teenager. It happened at a Boy Scout retreat. Several of us were out hiking when we saw a deer. We gave chase and were separated from each other. I can tell you that it is easy to get disoriented in the woods. (Especially when you are young and inexperienced.) I was lost in the woods for most of the day. By the time I made it back to camp, I was cold, tired, and hungry. I was also in trouble. Read more »

Eternal Tragedies

Whenever a great disaster comes upon the Earth, people cry out to God and demand to know: Why? (Even your own children may be asking this question.) For many, they cry out to a god that will never hear them. It reminds me of Paul’s sermon in Acts, Chapter 17. Here is an excerpt:
